Who Can Ride What?
Understanding your driving license is key to knowing what motorbikes you're legally allowed to ride. Here’s a quick breakdown:
- Pre-1st February 2001: If you passed your driving test before this date, you can ride a moped (up to 50cc) without L plates or a CBT test. You should have Category P on your license. For larger motorcycles, a CBT is still required.
- Post-1st February 2001: If you passed after this date, you'll need to complete a CBT course before legally riding a moped or motorbike of any size.
Licenses Breakdown
- AM License: For riders aged 16 and above, the AM license allows riding mopeds and scooters up to 50cc and 4kW, with no L plates required.
- A1 License: For those looking to ride up to 125cc motorcycles (11kW max), perfect for city rides and removing L plates.
- A2 License: For those 19+, allowing you to ride motorcycles up to 35kW (47bhp) after either two years on an A1 license or directly via CBT and the Direct Access route.
- A License: The ultimate license for unrestricted motorbike riding. You can apply after two years with an A2 license (at 21 years old) or via Direct Access at 24 years old. This allows you to ride any motorcycle, regardless of engine size.
