1st ride of the impressive Ninja 400
KAWASAKI NINJA 400If you're looking for an all-round sports bike, look no further.
I have been so impressed with the new Kawsaki Ninja 400. The extra 103cc really makes a noticeable difference, power is up from 39bhp to 44bhp from the previous generation Ninja 300.
During my first ride I felt comfortable straight away, the seating position is a bit more aggressive than the naked z400, with clip-on raised style handlebars and further back controls. But not so much that it feels uncomfortable after a long ride.
The seat although could do with a little more padding, I would look to upgrade that straight away.
Thanks to the shorter wheelbase and longer swingarm, its chunkier 41mm forks and lighter wheels, the Kawasaki Ninja 400 now is 8kg lighter than the previous version. It now weighs at 168kg, making it feel very agile at low speeds and quick at changing directions.
Having said that, I felt a little cramped on this Ninja 400, so if you're over 6 foot, the naked z400 may suit you a little better. This definitely helps shorter riders, as it's very easy to reach the ground with your feet.
Neverthless, the Kawasaki Ninja 400 would make for a perfect first track bike, or first bike for that matter. Even though the suspension feels a bit springy, the front brake is decent enough for everyday riding.
Overall the ride quality is higher than I expected, if you take into consideration the starting price of only £5,599 this Kawasaki Ninja 400 is very competitive in the market. You'll struggle infact to find a decent alternative, with a top speed of over 100mph (making it the quickest bike in its class) and a revised equipment, straight from the big sister Ninja 650.
It’s a genuine surprise just how much fun the Ninja 400 was to ride.
I also wouldn't be surprised if one day I find myself snatching one of these, just for the occasional light-hearted track day. You can find many examples with upgraded suspensions, brakes, airbox and intake, that can transform this fine Ninja 400 in a pure track machine.
