Why Invest In A Charger?

No one wants to go to their bike before a ride out and get that heart sinking Click..click..click...nothing

At KJM we have found the harsh reality of modern bikes is if they are left alone, even for as little as a couple of weeks in our lovely warm showroom, the battery will become discharged and even a small current loss will leave the lights and clocks on but not enough power to start the bike.

Now perhaps when you go into that cold garage, all ready to go out, and you get the dreaded clicking you can jump or bump it. Then take it out to get some juice back in, it manages not to cut out on you and you dont stall it, hey presto the battery is healthy...alternatively its cells have become damaged, can not hold charge, and the only option, as I have learned to my own cost, is loosing precious riding time, the fustration of sourcing the right battery and the expense of a replacement to boot.

What`s The Alterntive? - Simple, if you want to go to your bike and ride it when you want to, purchase a dedicated motorcycle battery charger and get into the habit of using it.

Which One? - Start at the beginning, there are a lot of different battery types out there, be it lead acid, gel or lithium-ion, so what battery do you have and are you at some point going to change to another type?

Why? - Because different batteries charge in different ways and to get the most out of it you need to purchase the charger thats appropriate.

Best Brand? - There are lots of makes and, like the bikes we ride, they come in different prices, specifications and we all have our own preferences.

What To Consider? - First for me is safety, some switch automatically between charging and discharging, as well as reconditioning the battery meaning set it and forget it. Then there is auto charge rate adjustment, polarity detection and the list goes on. My honest opinion is think of it like other bike accessories, research, get whats right for you and dont get a low cost option only to wish a month down the line you had made the choice you knew was right.

How Much? - The well know names like OptiMate and Oxford both do a range starting from under £40, which is probably cheaper that a decent battery.

So there you have it, if you dont want to bring the pain of not going out onto yourself take care of your battery by using a battery charger. No it cant fix a damaged battery but it will keep it healthy for as long as possible.
